Katy ISD Summer Workshop

The Robert R. Shaw Center for STEAM

The Robert R. Shaw Center for STEAM is designed to provide students across grade levels with space to bring ideas from conception through design to production.  It's about young people collaborating with professional mentors and volunteers representing STEAM-related occupations on authentic activities and with authentic applications.  Projects at the Shaw Center are developed around interdisciplinary learning with an emphasis on inspiring students to be innovators in the areas of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

The Katy ISD, located just west of the Houston metropolitan area, has offered its first ever Young Inventors Showcase summer workshop. With a "full house", forty two Katy ISD students were eager to spend a week learning the steps necessary for the development of a successful invention.

The curriculum establish by the STEAM center is to have the students "brainstorm", in small groups, to go through the steps of creating predetermined inventions. During the first day's cession, the problem presented was what happens to a flash drive when it accidentally goes through the washing.

Katy ISD Young Inventors Showcase 2 During the "critical thinking" stage, students use their "problem solving" skills to record various solutions. The curriculum has already determined a possible common direction for the entire class to move.

The Robert R. Shaw Center contains eight warehouse style satellite work areas, each containing state of the art equipment for the fabrication of science materials. Students now proceed to these design bays to build their prototypes.

The curriculum has already determined the supplies needed to successfully manufacture their first prototype. Here, we see the students as they gather those supplies.

An abundance of supplies and reference materials are set up for the students to choose from. It's up to each group to determine which ones they'll need to create their prototype.

Groups of four students work together on their invention. Mariam Manual is the driving force. What a blessing she is.
